Mumbai is widely considered India's most cosmopolitan city, filled with a rich sense of culture and sophistication. It is a city where business moguls rub shoulders with artists and worldly jet-setters. All considered, it's not surprising that this special corner of India should have some excellent restaurants.
Those who know the city will be aware that most of its fine dining establishments are to be found in the luxury hotels. In part, this is what makes Indigo such a rare and valued eatery. Not only does it stand on its own in a beautiful colonial-style bungalow, but it is considered the best of Mumbai's eateries, often considered one of the world's best restaurants.

Opened in 1999 by formidable duo, Rahul and Malini Akerkar, it has gone from strength to strength, on the way earning awards and praise both nationally and internationally. Before the creative modern European cuisine comes into the picture, Indigo diners get to experience the understated contemporary elegance of this Colaba district eatery.
There is an airy, free-flowing feel to the bungalow, itself portioned into different dining areas. The main dining room is the largest, yet seats only 45 persons. The Yellow Room is slightly more intimate with a capacity for 20. With its burnt yellow aura, it's perfect for a romantic meal, or just to experience the kitchen's romance with food.
The Black Lounge supplies a different feeling, though equally inviting, but is perhaps better suited to a special occasion or celebration than a flirtatious dinner with a shared desert. November through March, the lovely Terrace, adjacent to the lounge, is the last of the dining spaces, although there is still more to Indigo. The Bar is to be found off the entrance and has become a favored Mumbai haunt for fine cocktails and exceptional wine.
Graduations of wood, white linens, clean lines, subdued lighting and the combination of conviviality and warmth lend Indigo its pervasive charm and elegance. As pleasurable to most senses as it is, the environment is something of an introduction to the real senses, smell and taste; this is what really sets Indigo apart from other restaurants. The delightful interpretations of modern European cuisine have been conceived by Rahul Akerkar and his highly competent team.
The expression 'modern European' may guide your thoughts to a specific set of dishes. At Indigo it is merely the starting point, a useful descriptor which clues Mumbai's gourmets into the skill and precision with which each dish is created. Far from limiting itself to the known, Indigo's kitchen is a hive of innovation and creative brilliance. You can expect dishes which make full use of the best local produce, a few spicy elements incorporated here and there.
Naturally, a menu which changes to utilize the best, freshest produce changes all the time; it's the reason you can often see regulars rushing in to find out what the daily specials are.
As with every aspect of Indigo, the wine list is something of a treat. More than a list, it is a treasure trove for the adventurous oenophile, and a tempting read for the casual tippler.
Having won successive awards from Wine Spectator magazine, you can expect just the right bottle to make those perfectly prepared culinary morsels sing in your mouth. Add into the colorful mix the typically wonderful service and an authentic passion for people and it's easy to see why tables at Indigo are in such high demand.
